- Can I charge my own rate, like £40 an hour?
- Yes. You set the price on every job, as an hourly rate or a fixed price, and the office approves it with the client before you go. We do not set or cap your rate, and we do not promise a figure.
- How do I get more work as a tradesperson in London?
- Most trades use a mix: word of mouth, their own website and Google profile, lead sites, and working with agents and maintenance companies who already have the customers. May OS is the last kind: the jobs come from Mayfair's agents, landlords and homeowners, and you price them.
- Is May OS an alternative to Checkatrade, MyBuilder or Rated People?
- It works differently. Directory and lead sites charge a membership or a fee per lead or shortlist, and you then compete to win the customer. On May OS there is no membership and no lead fee: the customer has already chosen Mayfair, up to three trades price the job and the office approves the price. Plenty of trades use both.
- Does it cost anything to join May OS?
- No. It is free to apply, free to see jobs and free to price them. You are paid for the jobs you complete.
- What trades can join?
- Plumbers, Gas Safe heating engineers, electricians, drainage engineers, locksmiths, roofers, builders, carpenters, tilers, bathroom and kitchen fitters, flooring fitters, glaziers, air conditioning engineers, handymen, plasterers and decorators. Sole traders and small firms both apply the same way.
- How long does it take to apply?
- A couple of minutes: your name, company, phone, the postcode you work from, your trade and an email. The office reviews every application and emails you.
- Which areas are the jobs in?
- All 32 London boroughs and the City of London. You see jobs near the postcode you work from, with the distance on each one.
- How quickly do I need to respond to a job?
- Confirm within 30 minutes or the job is offered to the next trade. Every job shows the postcode, access notes and photos before you take it.
- Is this employment or self-employed work?
- Self-employed. You run your own business, set your own price on each job and choose which jobs to take.
